A hearty, traditional British cottage pie with savory ground beef, tender vegetables, and golden mashed potato topping — inspired by Gordon Ramsay’s flavorful approach.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Meat Filling:

  • 1.5 lbs ground beef
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 carrot, finely diced
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 3/4 cup beef broth
  • 12 sprigs thyme
  • 1 sprig rosemary
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp olive oil

For the Potato Topping:

  • 2 lbs Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream or milk, warmed
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1 egg yolk (optional)
  • Salt, to taste

Instructions

  1. Sauté onion, carrot, and garlic in olive oil until soft. Add beef and brown.
  2. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire, herbs, and broth. Simmer 15–20 mins.
  3. Meanwhile, boil potatoes until tender. Mash with butter, cream, egg yolk, and salt.
  4. Assemble in a baking dish: beef mixture on bottom, mashed potatoes on top.
  5. Bake at 400°F for 20–25 minutes until golden. Broil briefly for extra browning.

Notes

  • Add veggies like peas or mushrooms to the meat filling.
  • Make ahead and refrigerate or freeze before baking.
  • Use lamb for a traditional shepherd’s pie.
