Meatballs:
1 lb ground beef
1/3 cup breadcrumbs
1 egg
1/4 cup grated onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp pepper
1/2 tsp dried thyme
Onion Gravy:
2 tbsp butter
1 tbsp olive oil
2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
1 tbsp flour
2 cups beef broth
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
Fresh thyme or 1 bay leaf (optional)
Topping:
1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
Fresh parsley or thyme, for garnish
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400°F. Mix meatball ingredients, form into balls, and bake for 15–18 mins.
In a skillet, heat butter and oil. Add onions and cook 25–30 minutes until deeply golden.
Stir in flour, then slowly add broth and Worcestershire. Simmer 5–7 minutes until thickened.
Add meatballs to the gravy and simmer 5–10 minutes.
Sprinkle cheese on top and broil until melted and golden.
Serve hot with sides of choice.
